"I love learning about lots of different conditions that can affect the eye"

As part of my job I do various assessments. These include different types of vision testing and taking different observations and measurements such as intra ocular pressure, BPs and pupil checks. We also do a lot of venepuncture and cannulation, as well as administering eye drops and medications when required, and administering IV diagnostic dyes for ocular angiography.

An additional part of my role has been to learn how to administer Botox to treat various medical conditions so I assist in this clinic on a weekly basis.

Other roles on the department include removal of dressings, syringing of the tear ducts, triaging patients in casualty and assisting the doctors and nurse specialists as well as working alongside other members of the MDT to keep the clinics running well.

What do you love about your job?

I love learning about lots of different conditions that can affect the eye and triaging patients in casualty as it gives an idea as to how different conditions manifest themselves. I also love having the opportunity to chat to patients when the department is a little quieter. On the other hand I enjoy the challenge when the clinics are busier and when I get to organise and solve problems.  I like that I have been able to do and learn things that I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to learn in different areas of nursing such as the administration of botox, and the day time working hours really suit my home life.

Proudest moment so far

Receiving a letter from patient services which a patient had sent in to thank me for the care I’d given.

Any tips for finding a job you love?

Go with what you want to do and will enjoy and be comfortable doing. Don’t choose a job because other people tell you it’s what you should be doing.

Travel and unusual aspects of the job

There are opportunities to go and do outreach clinics. I enjoy this as I get to see how different areas work.

Usual working hours

I work 37.5 hours, Monday – Friday. This consists of 3 earlier (8-5), 1 late (9-6 or 9.30-6.30) and 1 half day (8-1.30). One Saturday in six I work this as my half day and have a day off midweek.

What training is need for your job?

A nursing degree and in-house training in the department.
