A practitioner working at the Freeman Hospital’s cardio theatres has been shortlisted for this year’s RCNi Awards in the ‘Healthcare Assistant Award’ category.

Lisa Morgan was appointed the cardiothoracic theatres family-centred care lead after displaying exceptional people and communication skills. This was a new role developed with Lisa’s input to help support young patients and their families who understandably feel extremely anxious prior to going to theatre for heart surgery. She meets with them before going for their operation to help develop a relationship and to allay as many fears as possible.

Lisa also created a training package for staff to help educate them on the importance of family-centred care and to explain how they can better support families, to meet the emotional and psychological needs.

For the children, she organises visits from Baggins the bear and has created a book which is translatable to help discussion with the whole family. Each child having surgery also gets a certificate, and Lisa alters shifts so she has more time to dedicate to patients before their surgery.

Lisa says:  “I was nominated because of the impact this initiative has had on our patients and families and the positive change in our nursing practice and absolutely love it!

“I am so passionate to make a change for the better and with the support and belief from my team it has enabled me to flourish at work and inspire a team.”

The RCNi Awards Finals  are on the 3rd of July at the Park Plaza in Westminster London. Good luck Lisa!
