'I love working with the staff in theatres - they make a difference. They are the best!'

My day to day work is ensuring that the systems and processes that are in place work and are followed. I also monitor various standards, including theatres are as clean as they should be, policies and procedures are followed and supporting the Band 7s in the department in running a successful unit.

I encourage integration of best practice within the specialities within the department and work closely with the other matrons in our Directorate to deliver both Directorate and Trust strategies. No two days are the same.

What do you love about your job?

Working with the staff  in all of the theatres – without a doubt. They are hardworking, caring and enthusiastic. They are also proud to work for Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals.

There are times when we are short staffed, but they rally around to make sure that we continue to deliver safe effective quality care: and that’s it, they do care -really care. There isn’t a working day goes by when you don’t hear of someone “picking up the slack” especially as they don’t always get off duty on time. They make a difference. They are the best!

 

Proudest moment so far?

Receiving positive feedback following a difficult situation that was resolved, and realising that I fit into a part of a very successful team.

Any tips for finding a job that you love?

Never give up – keep trying. You WILL get the job that is right for you

What are your usual working hours?

37.5 hours over 5 days (and the rest!)

What training is needed for your job?

Life and clinical experiences with lots of patience – you come across so many different experiences in this job in the areas in which I cover, it makes it easier and more credible drawing on past experiences.

The majority of our patients cannot remember the theatre experience part of their pathway but we do get compliments and thank you cards.
