Integrated Laboratory Medicine (ILM) comprises:
- Blood Sciences (including Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood. Transfusion, Immunology and Point Of Care Testing (POCT).
- Cellular Pathology/Cytology.
- Mortuary Services.
- Molecular Pathology Node.
- Cellular Pathology (CEPA) Biobank.
- Microbiology and Virology, including PHE.
- Laboratory Genetics.
- Clinical Genetics.
Microbiology
The Department of Microbiology includes expertise in Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Parasitology, TB, Molecular Diagnostics and Infection Control. We provide one of the most comprehensive test portfolios in the UK – a one-stop shop for all Microbiology tests.

The Department of Blood Sciences includes expertise in Biochemistry, Haematology, Immunology and Transfusion. The service is provided from two laboratory sites: the Freeman Hospital and the Royal Victoria Infirmary. Our two-site approach means that if one analyser were to fail, specimens can be transported across the city and investigated overnight.

Development and Opportunities
We have many opportunities across the Directorate including the ability to train as Biomedical scientist in blood sciences, microbiology, genetics and cellular pathology. We also have a strong collaboration with the Universities for ongoing development and research and have our own ST training school for Histopathology, medical training opportunities within blood sciences, Microbiology and Genetics. We also have the opportunity for you to work as a as consultant pathology in one of the largest Integrated Pathology department.
