Apprenticeships

Whether you’re looking for your first job, your next step, some extra development or a completely new career, an Apprenticeship with Newcastle Hospitals could be for you.

Here at Newcastle Hospitals, we know Apprenticeships are a great way to support your future.

What is an Apprenticeship?

It has a fancy legal definition, put simply, it’s a development programme undertaken by someone while they are employed. While on the programme you will spend 20% of your time in ‘off the job’ learning. This might be in a lecture, 1:1 time with an assessor or maybe doing some self-directed study.

Myth Buster

No age limits

Often people think of apprentices and imagine 16 to 18 year olds learning a trade. In actual fact, anyone aged 16 or older can undertake an Apprenticeship.

Masters or Doctorate?

People mistakenly associate Apprenticeships with lower level qualifications. The truth is an Apprenticeship may include a Degree, Masters or even a Doctorate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is an Apprenticeship for?

Drop Down Arrow

Apprenticeships are for both potential new recruits and existing members of staff. It’s a myth that they are only for certain occupations or school leavers.

To be eligible for an Apprenticeship:

  • You must be training for a new job role, or training in an existing job role and require significant new knowledge and skills
  • You must be at least 16 years old, there is no maximum age
  • Have the right to work in England
  • Be one of the following:
    • a citizen of a country within the European Economic Area (EEA) (including other countries determined within the EEA or those with bilateral agreements), or have the right of abode in the UK, and have been ordinarily resident in the EEA (including other countries determined within the EEA or those with bilateral agreements), for at least the previous three years on the first day of learning
    • a non-EEA citizen with permission from the UK government to live in the UK, (not for educational purposes) and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least the previous three years before the start of learning

Depending on the Apprenticeship there may be some additional qualification requirements; this will be made clear in the person specification or advert for any of our Apprenticeships.

Some of our Apprenticeships may require you to be at least 18 years old when you start due to legislation, again we will make this clear in the advert.

How much will I get paid?

Drop Down Arrow

When you apply for an Apprenticeship opportunity here, the advert will make it clear how much you will be paid for that particular Apprenticeship. The pay for an Apprenticeship with Newcastle Hospitals varies depending on the role you are training for.

If you are an existing member of staff, staying in your existing role and undertaking an Apprenticeship, there is no change to your pay.

What is Newcastle Hospitals’ unique guaranteed job scheme?

Drop Down Arrow

As a potential new recruit looking to apply for an Apprenticeship, you are probably wondering what happens after your Apprenticeship. Well, at Newcastle Hospitals, as long as you complete your Apprenticeship and have a successful end of year performance and behaviour review, you will transition into your target role (the role you are training for). Recognising you are no longer a trainee, your pay will also increase.

What areas can I do an Apprenticeship in?

Drop Down Arrow

The answer to this question changes every day, there are new Apprenticeship programmes being designed nationally all the time. Apprenticeships now cover entry level roles to those that include a Masters Degree or Doctorate.

The Institute for Apprenticeships website provides useful information on Apprenticeship programmes that exist, or are in development. Please note that not all Apprenticeships listed on their website will be available at Newcastle Hospitals.

How long will my Apprenticeship last?

Drop Down Arrow

How long your Apprenticeship lasts depends on the Apprenticeship you’re undertaking. All Apprenticeships must be at least 12 months long.

As a general rule a Level 2 Apprenticeship would be around 12 months, Level 3 around 18 months, Level 4 and 5 around 24 months. Degree Level Apprenticeships can be 36 months or longer.

Please remember that the above is a general rule, lots of things can impact on the duration of an Apprenticeship, such as the way the programme is delivered, or whether you’re undertaking the Apprenticeship on a part times basis.

Why we love our Apprenticeship?

Aaron | Apprentice Microbiology Lab Assistant

Without fail, every day presents me with new challenges and more things to reflect on. At the start of my apprenticeship I felt a bombardment of facts and information that excited me every time I walked through the door. Five months on and I still carry that sense of enthusiasm, which I never thought I could experience from a job.
